Towards the vastness

Towards the vastness

Robert Nunkovics

When I arrived in Lanzarote, I walked out of the airport without plans.

I set out from a cold winter, so on my arrival at the island, I headed towards the northern tip, facing the Sun. By passing a few fences, roundabouts and fast lanes, I found a footpath along the ocean. The vast horizon was broken by sunlight, and I was torn by strong winds, and the combination of the two had an impact on me.

There are many ways to take a walk. You can walk, you can wander, you can stroll, you can trek, and you can do it all carefully, watchfully, indifferently, or in a hurry and who knows how. The landscape then travelled is, in each case,
a subjective representation of the view. It’s a formation of the imagination, in which the spectacle is restructured and becomes filled with meaning.

It took me approximately a week and a half to reach the northern tip of the island, and in the meantime, almost unnoticed, all the thoughts I carried, got clarity. The space created by being on the road was as personal and unique as the island itself. I felt admiration for its beauty, strangeness and simplicity.
